Here is a little recap on the history of the BMW 3 Series – Our Bread and Butter!

Some 35 years ago, the arrival of the first BMW 3 Series identified the beginning of one of the most notable success stories in BMW model history. We were introduced to an entirely new vehicle that was both compact and sporty.  And then there was the most distinguished design feature of the front, which became BMW’s biggest and most recognizable feature even from a distance – the BMW kidney grille.

In the years since 1975, the face of the BMW 3 Series has constantly developed. The designers have always managed to incorporate dynamics, innovation and aesthetics into a well balanced, modern and future-oriented overall concept, whilst at the same time maintaining BMW’s traditional values.

As a result, each BMW 3 Series has retained its unmistakable brand identity and can be identified as a BMW at very first glance.

Around 30 of our apprentices from 4 workshops were treated to Korean BBQ fun, games and prizes, organised by Apprentice Master – Les Brumby and hosted by Service Manager Phil Ward.

Sandi’s story.

Little Mia Warren, my granddaughter, now nearly five years old, was diagnosed at 6 weeks with the condition known as Cystic Fibrosis, the most prevalent, life shortening disease affecting people of European ancestry.  The incidence in Australia is about 1 in every 3000 live births and about 1 in every 25 people are carriers of a genetic mutation responsible for CF.  Caused by the pairing of two recessive genes, it requires both mother and father to be carriers, a fact of which our family were unaware at Mia’s birth.

With each pregnancy, there is a 1 in 4 chance of the baby having the condition, 2 in 4 of being a carrier with no symptoms and 1 in 4 of being healthy.  The condition impairs the lungs and pancreas with thick mucus preventing normal function.  Physiotherapy is a daily and lifetime necessity as is the requirement to take pancreatic enzymes with each meal to aid digestion and food absorption.  Click Cystic Fibrosis for further CF reference.

On Saturday 16th July 2011 our family held their 4th Salty Sea Dogs Dinner at Peppers Anchorage, Port Stephens, in aid of Cystic Fibrosis Research.  The dinner is so-named because the sound Mia makes when she coughs (worse when she also suffered from Tracheo-malacia, which caused a partial flattening of the bronchial tubes) reminds us of a seal, also known as a salty sea dog, barking.  Therefore the logo was created and this year baseball caps have been made with the logo embossed, and are selling these to raise extra funds.

The theme of this year’s event was James Bond and invited guests to wear formal attire.  The tables were each named after a James Bond movie starring the particular guests seated, and the tables were adorned with over-sized martini glasses filled with water and candles, and placed on a mirrored disk.  The colour theme was red, black and white. Drinks were served in an adjoining room where guests could also peruse the items being offered for the Silent Auction, which included signed football jerseys from each code, selections of wine, magnums of Verve Cliquot, accommodation packages, a leather handbag, pre-paid telephone packages, a 1973 Commemorative Port and much more.  A raffle was also conducted on the evening with prizes including dinners donated by local restaurants, accommodation packages, clothing, beauty and theatre ticket prizes.
The evening began with Kent Warren, Mia’s father, my son, who is also the General Manager of the Anchorage Resort and always takes the role of MC, arriving into the room to the James Bond theme being played and shown on the screen, wearing full wet suit and brandishing a toy gun before stripping down to his dinner suit underneath and ordering a martini from the nearby waiter.  It was all great fun and totally unexpected even by those who had organised the evening!

There was a delicious menu created by the Anchorage team, with all meat, seafood, wines and beers for the evening, donated by local suppliers, allowing an even greater financial outcome for the fundraiser.

Games of Heads and Tails had a James Bond theme and centred around True or False questions based on the films, their stars and characters.  The guest speaker on the evening was Dr Adam Jaffe, a respiratory specialist from the Children’s Hospital at Randwick who discussed the condition of Cystic Fibrosis and where research is taking those afflicted.

After dinner, the Loud Auction was conducted by Paul Gamer, a local licensed auctioneer whose professionalism and humour make for a most entertaining and successful auction.  Prizes included fabulous accommodation packages donated at the major Peppers Resorts around Australia, Qualia accommodation on Hamilton Island, accommodation at Peppers Beacon Hotel Queenstown, New Zealand together with a Golfing Package at the nearby The Hills Golf Course, a golfing package for 16 players at our local Pacific Dunes Golf Course, and of course, the BMW Baby Racer donated by Col Crawford Motors which raised the phenomenal sum of $1050!!

An amazing figure of over $33000 was raised on the evening thanks, not only to the generosity of those attending on the night, but to the individuals and companies who donated prizes, goods and services for this worthy cause about which we are so passionate. 

The monies raised have been sent to Cystic Fibrosis NSW for use in research into a cure for this, as yet incurable, and life-debilitating and life-truncating disorder. We are in the process of determining a date for the 2012 dinner which will, once again, be held at Peppers Anchorage, Port Stephens.

Beating its stiff competition – the likes of the VW Golf Trilogy, the Subaru WRX, Audi’s TDI TT – the judges declared the BMW 135i Sport Coupé  as “the complete driver’s car”.

In 2011, BMW 135i Coupé saw a price increase of $2200, but that simply was not enough to knock it from its pedestal.
Since its introduction in 2008, it has cemented its status as a champion among the BMW family and as the ultimate driving machine.

Renault Aus MD announced that the Mégane Renault Sport 250 has been a stand out since it hit the streets, October of last year.  He said ” We were delighted, though not surprised, last year when the Mégane Renault Sport 250 won”….”but to retain the(…) position among a very tough field. There is true depth(…) not just in terms of performance (…) also in terms of it appeal to car enthusiasts”.

Although it may have been a tough competition, the judges agreed that the Mégane Renault Sport 250 won with a unanimous vote, declaring that the engine, its grip, sporty interior and its dramatic looks were the winning factors.

Now the team from Cromer have finished their 3-day Australian National Final Championship round at Twin Waters resort in Queensland and they are on their way to China next year for the China / Australia Holden Scramble Championship!! 

Since they arrived for their practice round on Friday, they have played exceptionally. Yesterday, they played in the final 6-team play off.  The 3 winning groups go to China…and they won their match!!

When we spoke to them, they are so excited they can hardly speak.  They are off to the presentation dinner and although they don’t have all the details of their prize as yet, we think they may have won 3^rd place over all.  There were 25 mens teams and 4 ladies teams and these final rounds were a combined field.

It joins it’s sister, the  Cruze sedan as the only Australian-designed and -manufactured small car on the market.  The base model starting at $21,240 also makes it the most affordable small cars on the market.

And variety is clearly the spice of life with options including CD, CDX, SRi and SRi-V…and  petrol, turbo-petrol or turbo-diesel engines!!! 

With competitors such as the Hyundai i30, VW Golf,  Ford Focus and the Mazda3, the Cruze Hatch looks likely to succeed as a worthy contender due to the fact that it is manufactured in Australia.

Although, it may mean nothing to the average buyer as to where the car is made, just as long as:

1. it looks good,
2. has a good ANCAP rating,
3. is loaded with heaps of standard features and;
4. it is reasonably priced.

The bonus then would be if it happens to be made locally.  Having ticked all the boxes, the Holden Cruze should sell like hot cakes!!!

The driveway resembled that of a showroom floor with an assortment of Holden’s (and Nissan’s) lined up.  The ladies were welcomed with a nice hot coffee and tea to start the evening.

Joanne, from Women on Wheels, called our guests into the impeccably clean workshop for the registration and to introduce the ladies to Jason and his team of technicians.

Groups of 5 were formed and sent to each of the 5 demonstration bays.  Cars on hoists. Cars with flat tyres. Some with no tyres. Some with no oil and others with no coolant. Cars with flat batteries.  All ready to be diagnosed, assessed, changed and pumped.  Air filters, all wheel drive, circuits, “diffs“, tread wear, torque, brake pads, traction control,  and many other mechanics of the car were explained in a very relaxed manner.

The technicians were on hand to demonstrate and allow for the ladies to try their luck at changing the wheels, adding coolant, checking oil, checking tyre pressure and some even went as far as realising a blown fuse and how to change it.  The technicians may find themselves out of a job at this rate.

Joanne was a fantastic host and  really ensured the content of each workshop was presented clearly and in “women’s” language. It was a great night – very informative and left everyone feeling a lot more confident and more car aware.

The ‘Women on Wheels’ evening is aimed at acquainting you with the mechanics of your Holden. You will be shown how your vehicle operates, ways of keeping it safe and dependable and what to do in an emergency situation, such as changing a wheel, jump start a vehicle, checking you tyre pressure plus a lot more.

Light refreshments and a free show bag will be supplied on arrival. You will also receive a certificate after the evening.
