Some 35 years ago, the arrival of the first BMW 3 Series identified the beginning of one of the most notable success stories in BMW model history. We were introduced to an entirely new vehicle that was both compact and sporty.  And then there was the most distinguished design feature of the front, which became BMW’s biggest and most recognizable feature even from a distance – the BMW kidney grille.

In the years since 1975, the face of the BMW 3 Series has constantly developed. The designers have always managed to incorporate dynamics, innovation and aesthetics into a well balanced, modern and future-oriented overall concept, whilst at the same time maintaining BMW’s traditional values.

As a result, each BMW 3 Series has retained its unmistakable brand identity and can be identified as a BMW at very first glance.

Sandi’s story.

Little Mia Warren, my granddaughter, now nearly five years old, was diagnosed at 6 weeks with the condition known as Cystic Fibrosis, the most prevalent, life shortening disease affecting people of European ancestry.  The incidence in Australia is about 1 in every 3000 live births and about 1 in every 25 people are carriers of a genetic mutation responsible for CF.  Caused by the pairing of two recessive genes, it requires both mother and father to be carriers, a fact of which our family were unaware at Mia’s birth.

With each pregnancy, there is a 1 in 4 chance of the baby having the condition, 2 in 4 of being a carrier with no symptoms and 1 in 4 of being healthy.  The condition impairs the lungs and pancreas with thick mucus preventing normal function.  Physiotherapy is a daily and lifetime necessity as is the requirement to take pancreatic enzymes with each meal to aid digestion and food absorption.  Click Cystic Fibrosis for further CF reference.

On Saturday 16th July 2011 our family held their 4th Salty Sea Dogs Dinner at Peppers Anchorage, Port Stephens, in aid of Cystic Fibrosis Research.  The dinner is so-named because the sound Mia makes when she coughs (worse when she also suffered from Tracheo-malacia, which caused a partial flattening of the bronchial tubes) reminds us of a seal, also known as a salty sea dog, barking.  Therefore the logo was created and this year baseball caps have been made with the logo embossed, and are selling these to raise extra funds.

The theme of this year’s event was James Bond and invited guests to wear formal attire.  The tables were each named after a James Bond movie starring the particular guests seated, and the tables were adorned with over-sized martini glasses filled with water and candles, and placed on a mirrored disk.  The colour theme was red, black and white. Drinks were served in an adjoining room where guests could also peruse the items being offered for the Silent Auction, which included signed football jerseys from each code, selections of wine, magnums of Verve Cliquot, accommodation packages, a leather handbag, pre-paid telephone packages, a 1973 Commemorative Port and much more.  A raffle was also conducted on the evening with prizes including dinners donated by local restaurants, accommodation packages, clothing, beauty and theatre ticket prizes.
The evening began with Kent Warren, Mia’s father, my son, who is also the General Manager of the Anchorage Resort and always takes the role of MC, arriving into the room to the James Bond theme being played and shown on the screen, wearing full wet suit and brandishing a toy gun before stripping down to his dinner suit underneath and ordering a martini from the nearby waiter.  It was all great fun and totally unexpected even by those who had organised the evening!

There was a delicious menu created by the Anchorage team, with all meat, seafood, wines and beers for the evening, donated by local suppliers, allowing an even greater financial outcome for the fundraiser.

Games of Heads and Tails had a James Bond theme and centred around True or False questions based on the films, their stars and characters.  The guest speaker on the evening was Dr Adam Jaffe, a respiratory specialist from the Children’s Hospital at Randwick who discussed the condition of Cystic Fibrosis and where research is taking those afflicted.

After dinner, the Loud Auction was conducted by Paul Gamer, a local licensed auctioneer whose professionalism and humour make for a most entertaining and successful auction.  Prizes included fabulous accommodation packages donated at the major Peppers Resorts around Australia, Qualia accommodation on Hamilton Island, accommodation at Peppers Beacon Hotel Queenstown, New Zealand together with a Golfing Package at the nearby The Hills Golf Course, a golfing package for 16 players at our local Pacific Dunes Golf Course, and of course, the BMW Baby Racer donated by Col Crawford Motors which raised the phenomenal sum of $1050!!

An amazing figure of over $33000 was raised on the evening thanks, not only to the generosity of those attending on the night, but to the individuals and companies who donated prizes, goods and services for this worthy cause about which we are so passionate. 

The monies raised have been sent to Cystic Fibrosis NSW for use in research into a cure for this, as yet incurable, and life-debilitating and life-truncating disorder. We are in the process of determining a date for the 2012 dinner which will, once again, be held at Peppers Anchorage, Port Stephens.

The differences between the current BMW 1 Series and the new 1 Series M are quite extensive. 

The delivery of our first BMW 1 Series M

• The protruding wheel arches

In my opinion, from one who has become a golf tragic in the last six years or so, I know only too well that Cromer is a somewhat challenging course – to put it mildly!  Cromer is a championship course, redesigned a few years ago by leading course architect, James Wilcher.  Tuesday’s conditions, with the wet ground and a ‘chemical reaction’ problem with the greens (which had happened only days before our event), didn’t show the course at its best and I’m truly sorry about this.  However, I know that if our three winners can play that well at Cromer under those conditions, it’s a pretty good bet that they will handle The Royal Melbourne Golf Course just as well, for the National Final in November.  And I will be there cheering them on!

I was very pleased to be awarded for the “Social Ladies Nearest To Pin” prize-winner.  The fact that I was the only “Social Lady” in the field, after some of the other girls cancelled, is merely a small fact, which really need not be mentioned.  Let’s face it; I am a registered golfer with a current Australian certified golf handicap and a member of a golf club AND I own a Col Crawford BMW (OK, I don’t really “own” it….I just borrow it).  So, the only reason I am not eligible to play in the “official” BMW Golf Cup Tournament and have to be on the “Social” list is because I am related to Steve…..And isn’t that punishment enough??!!

I feel that my NTP mention was well deserved, for the pure fact that I actually landed on the green on the 18^th with one shot.  This is a tricky little hole and it is quite possible that your shot from the tee can land you in one of many surrounding gardens, a hazard across the fairway, a hazard to the left of the fairway – which runs right around the left side of the green, a hazard to the right of the fairway, a bunker on the right, a second bunker on the right or a 3^rd bunker on the right.  You can manage to avoid all of these challenges, but still hit one of the many tall trees on the right, which can – on a good day – put you back onto the fairway, which may put you onto the green for your 2^nd shot; but which can (on a bad day) just as easily put you into one of the many hazards or bunkers aforementioned.  If you hit one of those few and far between “blitzes”, you can also over-shoot the green altogether.  So, on some days, you will find yourself on the green for 2 (on an ordinary day) or 3 or even 4 (on a bad day) if you have to take a penalty to drop out from one of the hazards.  And let’s not get started on the putting – because, really, if you’re on the green for 4 it’s probably another wipe!!

So, I think to be “somewhere on the green” for one shot deserves the NTP mention – Social game or otherwise!!  The fact that Steve then reneged on presenting me with the “Social Ladies Longest Drive” is something I have not yet had a chance to take up with him…. and as I think I’ve already gone over my “word allowance” for this blog, I won’t even start on what can happen to you as you come up the 8^th towards the clubhouse…. and it’s usually while everyone is looking out the window!

The BMW International Golf Cup Final in Coolum, QLD, was given the go ahead following the terrible situation of the Queensland floods recently.

The Col Crawford BMW Golf Cup 2010 Finalists - Ben O’Toole, Mark McKechnie and Alison Gattas - were welcomed with a full weekend’s agenda, and thankfully weather participated with the rain holding off for the Final on the Saturday.  Even though we failed to produce any winners, a good time was had by all.

During his acceptance speech, Roger thanked Col Crawford BMW for their wonderful sponsorship and remarked on how he had watched the dealership grow from strength to strength over 44 years, since his early days on the Northern Beaches.  He vowed to return next year to defend his title.

In one of his first events as a senior, Terry Price finished at 2 under par to be tied for third place with Jeff Woodland.  Former Bayview Junior and British Open runner up Mike Harwood was two shots further back at even par.

With the event attracting an array of PGA legends, Bayview Golf Club will look to make this an annual event on the PGA Legends Calendar.

  The Col Crawford BMW Twilight Series is being held at Bayview Golf Club every Monday evening throughout daylight saving, with it expected to attract a large field as the days get warmer and longer. Every week, Col Crawford BMW will present a BMW for a week to one lucky winner!

The first round of the Col Crawford BMW Twilight Series, held last night and saw a field of around 50 players, including Senior Sales Executive, Paul Kendall who played with Chairman, Bob Orth, and put in a solid effort.

But play of the day was no contest, with a nearly hole-in-one from Nikki ‘Tiger” Morley, our valiant Marketing Assistant. We have to note that Nikki, hasn’t picked up the clubs in a many years, so she is now on a strict regime of driving range and putting practice – to be bring a win home for Col Crawford BMW!

With much anticipation, it was time to draw the lucky player, who would drive a sexy Col Crawford BMW 330D convertible for a week. Nick Hayes, Col Crawford BMW, General Sales Manager, drew out a very exited winner, Joanne Stanning, who is now zipping around the Northern Beaches with a big smile on her face!
